Two Generations of Houses

Spray Foam Insulation in Moore deals with two kinds of homes. The first is the big wave of 1960s and 1970s construction: Moore went from 1,221 people in 1960 to about 18,761 in 1970 and 35,063 in 1980, per Wikipedia. The second is the houses rebuilt after the F5 tornado of May 3, 1999 and the EF5 tornado of May 20, 2013, which Wikipedia says destroyed entire subdivisions. By 2020 the city had 24,780 housing units, two thirds of them owner-occupied.

1970s ranches

Homes from Moore's first boom are mostly one-story brick ranches with low-pitched roofs and simple vented attics. After forty-plus years, the original loose fill has settled, the attic hatch is rarely sealed, and the ducts often have leaky joints. These houses respond well to the basics: seal the ceiling, check the ducts, and blow fill to R-38 or more.

Rebuilt homes

Houses rebuilt after 1999 and 2013 are newer, but newer does not always mean well insulated. Rebuilding happened fast and at scale, and attic insulation was often installed to the minimum of the day. We commonly find thin fill near the eaves, rooms over the garage that never feel right, and gaps around recessed lights. Topping up and sealing those spots is usually a modest job.

Safe rooms and garages

Many Moore homeowners have added storm shelters or safe rooms in garages since 2013. If you are converting part of the garage or adding a room nearby, it is a good time to insulate the shared walls and the ceiling. Closed-cell foam on a garage ceiling below living space also cuts fumes and noise.

Ducts in a hot attic

Most Moore ranches have their ductwork in the attic, and many have the furnace and coil up there too. When the attic reaches well past the outdoor temperature on a July afternoon, any leak in a return duct pulls that hot air straight into the system. On every Moore attic visit we look at duct connections, boots and the condition of the duct insulation. Where they are in rough shape, we tell you before we blow new insulation over them, since burying a leaking duct makes it harder to fix later.

Code and climate

Cleveland County is in Climate Zone 3A, where Oklahoma's code calls for R-30 ceilings in new work. Moore's July average high is about 93.4F, and Wikipedia notes that heavy rain often leads to flash flooding, so we check for moisture under the house and around slab edges when we look at a job. Moore Questions

My Moore house was rebuilt after 2013. Does it need more insulation?

Often it needs a little, not a lot. Common gaps are thin fill near the eaves, poorly sealed recessed lights and the floor over the garage. We measure and only quote what makes a difference.

What is the usual fix for a 1970s Moore ranch?

Seal the attic floor, check and seal the ducts, then blow cellulose or fiberglass to R-38 or more. It is one of the most cost-effective upgrades for that style of house.

Should I insulate the garage when adding a storm shelter?

If you are already working in the garage, it is a good time to insulate the wall and ceiling shared with the house. We can work around the shelter install schedule.

Is there an OG&E rebate in Moore?

OG&E lists an attic insulation rebate for its Oklahoma residential customers. If OG&E serves your home, check its current rules for depth and installer requirements.

Should my ducts be fixed before new attic insulation goes in?

Yes. Once loose fill covers the ducts, leaks are much harder to reach. We point out disconnected or leaking ducts so they can be sealed first.
